So I decided to watch “Mulan” tonight. I needed a little extra inspiration as I’ve been battling some intense anxiety and depression. Near the end of the movie, there is this part that really touched me. After Mulan accomplishes great things as “Ping”, saves all of China, and returns home, she offers her father the sword of Shan-Yu and the crest of the Emperor in order to restore whatever honor was lost to her father.
And you know what her father says to her?
“The greatest gift and honor of all is having you as a daughter.”
I was a daughter who was caught in the midst of divorce as a child and who didn’t see her dad as often as she would have liked. Because of this, I notice I am often trying to prove myself to those around me. Whether it’s coworkers, people I do ministry with–even God, I am ALWAYS performing and NEVER resting.
I’m just trying to find my place, always needing to affirm if I’m really valued. If I am secure.
And that’s unfortunate.
Ultimately, God is not looking for how many amazing things I can do. He’s not just looking out for how committed I am to church, to loving others, or to ministry. He’s not really interested in how much work I can do. I think He just wants me to be His daughter and for that love to be the core of everything I do.
When I am a daughter who is secure in my Father’s love, the storms won’t throw me and the circumstances won’t own me. People won’t be an objective to impress, but an opportunity to love.
If you’re fighting a battle tonight, I want you to know that you are not alone. I am praying for you as I type this. I pray that you would be filled with the hope of God. I pray you would find confidence in His love for you. I pray God’s love would fill any searching, any pain, and any longings you may currently possess. I speak wholeness and restoration into your life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Sometimes the biggest battles are the ones which no one else can see.
But God sees you.
And He sees me.
Just because you feel forgotten doesn’t mean you are. Just because you feel lost doesn’t mean you’re not found. Just because you feel misunderstood doesn’t mean you’re an outcast. You are CHOSEN. UNIQUE. PRECIOUS.
You are a child of God.
Don’t let the lies from bad experiences shape the potential for your future. Sure, crap may have happened, and crap is bound to happen again, but don’t you for one second let that turn you into an indecisive, wallowing coward. Because that is NOT WHO YOU ARE.
It’s time to stand up for yourself and fight for your dreams! It’s time to rise up and take back whatever was stolen from you! There are things in you that this world needs!
Now get off your butt and go be awesome!
